Mounds View for Veterans (MV4Veterans) is a student-led initiative through the Business
Management class at Mounds View High School. This class gives students the opportunity to
learn the concepts and values of being a good manager through a semester-long service
learning project. This year’s class is planning a dinner and silent auction fundraiser to help raise
money for Haven for Heroes.
Havens for Heroes is a non-profit organization, founded in December of 2018.This organization
is a substance and alcohol-free center and lodging facility that provides recovery and
transitional housing to service members and veterans. According to Rubin, a veteran who
sought help from Haven for Heroes, “Haven for Heroes gave me the inspiration to look within
myself to find what I needed to do to change my life and seek out the people who could help me
do that.”
The choice to help support homeless veterans was driven by the realization that there are a
large number of homeless veterans within Minnesota. As of 2022 there were an estimated 279
homeless veterans in Minnesota, and about 1.5 million veterans nationwide are considered
at-risk of homelessness. Veterans are 50% more likely to become homeless than other
Americans due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded
or substandard housing. Students want to help lower these numbers by raising money for
Haven for Heroes. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Haven for Heroes, who will use
the funds to restore the historical buildings which provide housing for veterans in need. The
financial resources also allow Haven for Heroes to provide veterans support in securing jobs
and meeting their basic needs.
A fundraising event will be hosted on May 19th, 2023, 6-8 pm, at Ideal Hall, located at 1494
Dale Street North Saint Paul, MN 55117. The night will include a dinner catered by TST
Catering, a silent auction, and speakers from Haven for Heroes. Tickets are regularly priced for
$50. Students are offering a discounted rate of $40 (and 5 free split-the-pot raffle tickets!) for
those who purchase before the end of April, as well as group rates of $180 for half a table (5
people), and $350 for a full table (10 people).
