On Dec. 18, at Park High School, the Girls Basketball Team had their first hard-fought loss of the season, beaten by only one point. With their 6-1 record, however, the Mounds View Girls Varsity Basketball team still is a leader in their conference as they return from break.

A major change this year is that the team consists of almost only sophomores and juniors, with only one senior accompanying them, as opposed to last year’s four. The younger girls have been thrown into leadership positions earlier than expected in order to be successful.

A bit worried over one of their should-be-returning seniors not able to play this season after an injury, the team has been dedicated to improving so that they can outplay the competition. “We have been working a lot on becoming faster and stronger,” said Sophie Montgomery, 11. “We also have been working on playing together as a team and bonding.” The coaches push the girls to their limits to develop their skills, and this year it’s clearly working.

Another boon for the 2015-2016 team is that many of the girls have played together previously. “We are friends [both] on the court and off the court,” said Montgomery. “Many of the girls I’ve known for years. That way, I know what they’re going to do in a game and how they play, so I can base what I do off of their tendencies.” said Montgomery.

They are a talented group of girls and have certainly come together to be leaders in their conference so far. While it may only be the beginning of their season, with eight more home games and 18 games left altogether, the team sets a high bar for the new year. The Lady Mustangs are definitely stampeding on the competitors. Keep up the hard work, girls!
