Can the Timberwolves continue their momentum from a Western Conference Finals appearance? Coming off a 49-33 record and another near championship level season, there are high hopes for the Timberwolves to finally bring Minnesota its first NBA title.
After a heart-breaking loss in the Western-Conference Finals last season, the Timberwolves spent the offseason working to sustain their success, “This summer was huge for us, just, you know, building that continuity and then just trying to build off that this season.” said Donte DiVincenzo, Timberwolves player from an interview by After The Buzzer. With a mix of offseason moves and internal development, the team hopes to push for a championship in a highly-competitive Western Conference.
The offseason was aggressive, one of the first moves made by the front office was attempting to trade for former Suns guard, Kevin Durant. According to Athlon Sports, the Timberwolves reportedly offered Rudy Gobert, Donte Divencenzo, Rob Dillingham and the #17 overall pick in this year’s draft. Instead of this blockbuster trade, the Timberwolves re-signed Julius Randle to a three-year $100 million deal, Naz Reid to a five-year $125 million deal and drafted Joan Beringer with the #17 pick. Another notable move was the sign and trade of Nickeil Alexander Walker to the Atlanta Hawks. To fill the openings, the team is relying on their internal growth from their 2024 draft class. “Jalen Clark, Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon. I think they all showed some promise at the end of last year.” said Chad Schlosser, math teacher and Timberwolves Action Pack member. “They have the opportunity to play these important minutes.” It will be a crucial year for developing this young draft class who are getting more opportunities.
Looking to bounce back from last season, expectations are high among fans and students at Mounds View High School. “I think expectations are super high right now, I mean, It’s the best the team has been in, honestly, forever, especially since 2004,” said Schlosser. In a poll of 50 randomly selected Mounds View students, 52% of students said the team would improve. While the majority of students said the team would improve, others are more skeptical about this year. “I just don’t think they can perform and show up, Naz Reid has been looking a little slow in practices. It’s just not looking as good,” said Mason Krueger, freshman. Despite split opinions, excitement for the upcoming season is at an all time high from students.
Going to the conference finals would be nothing short of impressive, the last time a team made three consecutive western conference finals was the Golden State Warriors (2015-2019). The Timberwolves will look to join that elite group this, striving for their third consecutive Western Conference Finals. Achieving this feat will require significant effort from all the players, but as Schlosser said, “We have a lot of young talent, our season will depend on their improvement. I think there is no reason we can’t get back to the Western Conference Finals again.” This Timberwolves team has already proven themselves as one of the best in the franchise’s history, reaching the conference finals which had not been done since the year 2004 led by superstar, Kevin Garnett.
Focused on growth from last season, the Timberwolves and their fans have high hopes for the season. The Timberwolves will be looking to bring Minnesota its first championship in franchise history that the fans and the team have been searching for decades.
